There could be more people considering alternative study options such as electrical courses after an industry source recently stated that an increasing number of such youngsters are "certainly" being priced out of attending major institutions.

Steve Burford, founder of finance website Wealthystudent.co.uk, pointed out that some school leavers are considering internships, travelling abroad or simply starting their own businesses as a result of the high cost of studying at UK universities.

On top of the price of fees involved, he pointed out that qualifications might not automatically improve job prospects, adding: "It simply isn't worth going to university to study something that may not help your career."

Mr Burford urged young people not to spend too long saving money for their time as a student, as it important to enjoy oneself and it is possible to get a job while doing a course.

According to research by HSBC, ten per cent of parents have decided they will not put forward cash for their children's university education due to the high costs set to be introduced from next year.
