Engineers will require training such as electrical courses to be leaders in the field of sustainable energy, according to one source.

Managing director of north-west organisation Scientiam Mandi O'Shea pointed out to Click Green there are several targets for the government and the construction and engineering sectors to meet in the coming years.

She highlighted the EU-imposed target of producing 15 per cent of the UK's energy from sustainable sources by 2020 and suggested training such as electrical courses could help professionals to meet tough environmental legislation.

"With strict building standards and European carbon reduction regulations it is essential to create a generation of renewable energy installation specialists," Ms O'Shea was quoted as saying.

In her view, it is vital that workers get a combination of hands-on and theoretical tuition on electrical courses, so they can be fully prepared for the changing market ahead of them.

Recent comments from head of sustainable business at Marks & Spencer Mike Barry suggest European firms need to do more to keep up with the US and Asia in terms of sustainable operations, according to Business Green.
