Gas Engineer shows great bravery!

We all know about the terrible incident that is Grenfell tower. Following yesterday's public enquiry report there has been some new insight into the details of the day... The report uncovered acts of bravery by gas engineer Jason Allday. The Gas Engineer was not working on the day of the incident but saw the report on the news that morning and arrived on the scene early in the morning. The gas engineer was told by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) they wanted the gas supply to the tower turned off, and just hours later they asked him if he would be willing to go into the basement and shut off the valves himself. Unfortunately, the extreme conditions of the basement floor of the tower meant that they were not able to turn in off the valves - However, the Engineer used his knowledge and set about trying to shut off the gas supply in the surrounding roads, which in the end was successful in cutting the supply of gas!

Looking to become a Gas Engineer?

If you are looking to become a Gas Engineer yourself then you are in the right place, we have been teaching gas courses for over 10+ years. Our instructors are incredible professionals and have a deep knowledge of the subject developed over years spent both teaching and working out in the industry themselves. We provide gas training courses for both completely new entrants and experienced plumbers seeking to add gas to their arsenal.

The best way to start is to get stuck in...here at Able Skills we have gas courses that are specifically geared towards new entrants. For example, the Gas New Entrant Gas Training Package is 7-weeks in total, during which you will learn the skills that are required for you to eventually be in a position to register with the Gas Safe Register. This package of learning is devised to take you to step by step through the various training in the essential skills required to become a safe and competent Gas Engineer!

We also run courses for experienced plumbers who are looking to also get some gas training. We know that this is a typical route for plumbers to take - the two trades a very similar in a number of ways and overall it just makes sense to eventually pick up both skills.

Qualified Plumber Gas Training Package 2, for example, begins with 5-weeks of training, which consists of Domestic Gas Safety Training. Upon successful completion, you will earn a  Bpec Gas Foundation Certificate - To gain this certificate you will need to complete a written and online examination to prove that you have understood and learnt correctly over the courses period. Over the 5-weeks you will cover a variety of topics including:

  • Gas safety controls
  • Pipe sizing
  • Gas rates / Heat inputs
  • Flueing
  • Appliance installation and servicing
  • Ventilation
  • Unsafe situations

The next stage is work placement portfolio completion; Part of the process of becoming Gas Safe registered is to prove your competence whilst working on various aspects of gas. This will need to be undertaken under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer whereby a portfolio is completed detailing the gas work that has been done, supported by photographic evidence and signed by your Gas Safe registered Engineer (You can find the engineer yourself, or if you can't, then we can provide one for a fee.).

The third and final stage of this package is ACS or Approved Certification Scheme. Which is an industry-wide recognised 'test of competence' and will act as proof to employers and clients that you are capable and able to carry out work correctly and safely... It is also needed when applying to become 'Gas Safe Registered'. - www.gassaferegister.co.uk
