A property industry source has suggested landlords are facing higher expectations regarding facilities, which may lead to them using engineers with electrical course qualifications to add new features to their residences.

James Davies, chief executive of Upad.co.uk, explained that innovations such as Wi-Fi and heightened security measures are becoming "the norm", as opposed to being found solely in luxury residences.

He said: "What this means for landlords is they need to raise their game. Whilst there are more tenants out there, tenants' demands and expectations are rising fast."

As a result, technicians who have completed electrical courses may soon see more landlords getting in contact who want help installing the latest technology.

Mr Davies explained that people are renting homes for longer due to the expense of taking out a mortgage, so the average age of such tenants has risen.

This week, Firstrung chief executive Paul Holmes claimed first-time buyers are not missing out on bargains on the property market, since sellers are still aiming too high.
