Ten London Boroughs are to receive funding to become more energy efficient.

The areas will each be given at least £200,000 to pioneer new schemes in designated carbon zones, creating more 'green collar' jobs and helping to lower energy bills in the process.

Councillor Sally Prentice, cabinet member for environment on Lambeth Council, where Brixton is one of the winning boroughs, commented that the aim of the Low Carbon Zone scheme is to get every business and household involved in the development.

She added: "This funding will help support a range of important projects that will make Brixton a flagship low carbon area and build on the fantastic work already being done by the council [and] community."

Councillor Prentice stressed that everyone in the UK needs to raise their game and act now if the country is to avert climate change.

All the boroughs' zones have a target to deliver 20.12 per cent of carbon emissions savings by 2012.
