Tradespersons who have completed an electrical training course may want to consider new research recently released by the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA).

According to a study by the body, manners are extremely important when it comes to homeowners choosing a worker to employ.

Some 78 per cent of respondents said that after a good price and solid reputation, a polite industry professional would get their vote above others.

Furthermore, the organisation found that clean clothes and a smart van and uniform are important to householders.

However, chief executive of the ECA Group Dave Pollock commented: "While it may be tempting to choose a tradesman because of a neat and tidy appearance and a polite personality, that doesn't necessarily mean they will do a good job."

The trade association - which was founded more than 100 years ago and represents electrical, installation engineering, electronic and building services firms - added that people should not always go with the cheapest option, as this will not necessarily mean the best service.

In addition, it advised homeowners to check guarantees and ask for references.
