We all know the winter months means more boiler breakdowns for people across the country. But it's being reported that the new year will see a massive 133,479 people have boiler problems according to British Gas.

With Qualified Gas Engineers set to come to the rescue, they are also giving a few tips to help the public make sure their homes stay safe, prevent call outs and keep their homes warm. Here are some wise words from Sunny Tolansky, a British Gas Engineer:

“Our research shows that having no heating or hot water during the colder months is people’s worst winter disaster in the home.

New Year tends to be chilly and it’s always a busy time for call-outs, especially when people who’ve been away over Christmas haven’t kept their heating and hot water systems ticking over. We recommend running your heating for at least an hour a day when it’s cold outside.”

But don't worry, here are a few more tips from Sunny!

Insulate your Hot Water System!

Sunny recommends, "Stopping heat from escaping doesn’t just save you money. When temperatures drop below zero, it’s important to make sure that the water inside your pipes doesn’t freeze and cause them to burst. Lagging materials are available from most DIY stores – an easy, cost-effective solution for protecting your water tank and pipes".

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector

"You can’t hear it, see it, taste it or smell it, and it kills around 30 people a year. Fortunately, carbon monoxide poisoning is preventable. Faulty central heating systems are one of the most common sources of carbon monoxide in the home – as well getting your boiler checked once a year, it’s essential to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted".

Make The Most Of Soft Furnishings

"Hanging curtains and placing rugs on hard floors are some of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your home warm this winter. Thick material (the thicker the better) prevents heat from being lost through windows and doors – just don’t forget to open your curtains during the day so that the sun can do some of the work".
