More young people could become interested in plumbing courses as a result of a new children's book written by a professional in the trade.

Percy Pulls the Plug was a lot of fun to write, according to author Chris Tomlinson of an Altrincham-based firm, but it was put together in the hope of encouraging more youngsters into the profession, reported the Manchester Evening News.

He explained that more young people need to take plumbing courses to safeguard the high standards required by clients and to be certain that people can carry out the job in a safe and effective manner.

"We're keen to make sure a level of competence in plumbing and electrical work can be sustained in years to come," Mr Tomlinson was quoted as saying.

The book sees Percy Pipe take on an apprenticeship and learn about the profession, with 60 hand-drawn illustrations accompanying the story.

It has been endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering.
