Students come from all walks of life to train at Able Skills and make a change in their careers. Whether it is older students coming from different careers or uni students decided to do something else, we have them all at Able Skills. Thomas comes under the uni student category and came to Able Skills in 2016 for a new start and a new career.

Back in 2016, Thomas was enrolled on a University course in Theatre and Film, however, he had an interest in plumbing and saw it as a chance to fit bathrooms and kitchens. He found us in Dartford and it was something he wanted straight away. To fit around his everyday life, Thomas completed the City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing Course at weekends and this allowed him to learn at his won pace. Thomas thoroughly enjoyed the course and mostly enjoyed the high level of hands-on training involved. He successful got through the course and pushed himself.

Thomas is dyslexic, and he worried that he would find the course hard, however, it was the right path for him and was able to learn at the right place. He challenged himself throughout and is now seeing the rewards. After his plumbing course he wanted to take his new career to the next level and he straight away booked his gas course. Due to being very busy with our gas courses, Thomas had to wait six months. However, this gave him a chance to go out and begin working as a Plumber and this is exactly what he done and in the process achieved his Plumbing NVQ.

Six months down the line and he was back at Able Skills to complete his gas course, again at weekends. His reasoning for his gas training was the options it would open for him and the higher level of work he would gain. Thomas found it a lot harder, however, he pushed himself again and passed all exams. His tutor, Roy was a huge help and he had high praise for him.

When training as a Gas Engineer, you need to go out and complete a portfolio of work evidence.

This all lead up to the point of Thomas completing his ACS, which he has just completed. He is now ready to go out and work and his plans are to get himself onto the Gas Safe Register and then go out and get some work.

Here is Thomas’ feedback from his time at Able Skills:

“From having no knowledge before I joined their courses. I done a plumbing level 2 with them then decided to continue and do a gas course. Completed my gas portfolio and then passing my acs! I had difficulties at times as I was dyslexic. With the help of the centre and the helpful tutors they provided, I was able to pass all my exams and now leave the centre with a bright future ahead as a gas engineer. I owe them my thanks and especially to Roy my gas tutor. I highly recommend their courses as there's a bright future at the end of it”

new career

We would like to congratulate Thomas on passing his ACS and wish him the best of luck in his new career!
