A young technician taking plumbing courses has pipped his fellow trainees to the title of plumbing and mechanical services apprentice of the year.

Ross Getty, 20, received the accolade at a major ceremony at Belfast Town Hall, which was hosted by comedian Tim McGarry and BBC presenter Karen Patterson.

The young plumber works at Sharpe Mechanical Services, which is based in the city and took home the employer of the year award, reported the Belfast Telegraph.

Derek Poole, chairman of Plumbing and Mechanical Services Training, commented: "The Apprentice of the Year awards are fitting recognition of the sheer determination of apprentices and their employers in continuing their apprenticeships in the most challenging of times."

A Scottish footballer this month showed his own commitment to complete his plumbing qualifications by joining a part-time side ahead of a full-time team.

Rory McAllister could have played for major teams such as Aberdeen, Hibernian or Sheffield United, but chose Peterhead so he could carry out his training on the side.
