The temperatures currently being experienced in the UK have been labelled "arctic" by one insurance group, with the conditions potentially leading to higher workloads for workers trained on plumbing courses.

More Than and RSA operations director David Pitt encouraged people to be careful if their house or office is set to be empty over the Christmas period.

The companies suggested there may be thousands of properties in danger of seeing water pipes burst, which could require the services of a tradesman who has taken plumbing courses.

"We are urging home and business owners to take the necessary steps to protect their property," said Mr Pitt.

The insurance providers recommended that individuals leave the heating on at a minimum temperature, turn water off at the stopcock and drain the system if they are set to be away for an extended period.

This week, fire minister Bob Neill urged people to be aware of the increased flame risk of using electric blankets and other heating devices.
