Workers on plumbing courses who undertake a homebuilding or renovating project could be in line to have VAT refunded on radiators.

Helena Gerwitz, general manager of Feature Radiators, accepted that the tax system can be complicated and involves a lot of deadlines and specific criteria to be met.

However, she stressed that in certain situations people can claim the VAT back on such heating devices, meaning tradesmen who have taken plumbing courses could see their costs go down.

The industry expert explained that a zero VAT rate may be applicable if the radiators are for a new build or extension, are part of a renovation or conversion, or are set to be installed in a listed property.

Ms Gerwitz added: "Due to the potential size of the refund you may be entitled to, it is imperative that you contact HMRC directly regarding your particular situation."

Plumbing professionals were recently the target of a campaign by HM Revenue & Customs, which gives such workers until May 31st 2011 to take advantage of a tax amnesty.
