Technicians who have completed plumbing courses have been advised that the key to decorating a small bathroom is to keep as much floor space available as possible.

Alison Cork, interior designer and founder of ProblemSolved.co.uk, explained that a bathroom will look bigger if more of the ground is visible.

For example, Ms Cork urged people not to have sinks or toilets with stems, rather have them hanging off the wall.

She described how, even if you cannot utilise the space under such items, it gives the "illusion" of there being more room, as does the use of larger tiles on the wall and floor.

"The other thing you shouldn't do in small bathrooms is use too many patterns and colours, because it will make it look even smaller," added Ms Cork.

Geberit recently suggested that people with larger bathrooms to decorate could take their cue from luxury hotel washrooms, which aim for a spa-like tranquillity.
