A home improvement expert has pointed out that many DIY tasks can be carried out by homeowners with a certain amount of know-how, which may lead to an increase in demand for plumbing courses.

Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, noted that individuals could save themselves money in the long term by doing such projects on their own.

He stressed that not all tasks are within reach of the average homeowner, with some procedures legally needing to be performed by technicians with official training, such as plumbing courses.

However, regarding many home improvements the expert said: "As long as you have got a bit of knowledge and a bit of confidence, then they are very easy to carry out. It is incredibly rewarding to do it."

Mr Orme's remarks were made in response to research by Spaceslide, which found that 61 per cent of adults in Britain would be more likely to have a go at a DIY project now than five years ago.
