Individuals whose dream job it is to be a plumber and who are trying to break into the field should get well prepared with plumbing courses.

Charlie Ball, deputy director of research at the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, said those who wish to follow their dreams and get a job that they really want need to be prepared to put in a bit more effort, given the state of the present jobs market in the UK.

He commented: "Competition is quite severe ... but last year employers reported unfilled vacancies for a number of reasons and this year is likely to be no different."

According to research by Incomes Data Services, there were 44 applicants for every graduate vacancy in 2010, up 25 per cent from 35 in 2009.

However, this could increase in 2011 as a backlog of unemployed graduates have a second attempt at gaining employment in their preferred areas, the report noted.
