The service offered by plumbing course graduates who have been officially registered has been lauded by a professional organisation.

Chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIIPHE) Blane Judd explained that such technicians will give added value by providing consumers with extra guidance.

"If as a consumer you engage with somebody who is properly qualified and professionally registered, then you will get more than just the job done," he said.

Mr Judd highlighted how vital it is that engineers who work on a property have passed the relevant plumbing courses, since many "amateurs" pose as qualified professionals and then get procedures wrong.

In his opinion, the main factors that customers look for when they are hiring a plumber are professional behaviour and standards of expertise.

According to research by Hycote, 90 per cent of homeowners would not hire a tradesman if they saw that their van was in poor condition.
