It is vital that renewable energy courses and other professional training are used to ensure the UK has sufficient skilled workers to take up employment in the green sector, it has been claimed.

Head of communications at RenewableUK Nick Medic explained that the system is functioning well in Scotland, where education initiatives have been set up in areas in which positions are projected to appear.

But he pointed out that the number of jobs available in the green sector is rising, which could inspire more people to sign up for renewable energy courses.

"At the moment, there is a balance between the growth of employment and the skill sets required and we just need to make sure this is maintained," said Mr Medic.

His remarks were made in response to research by Acre Resources showing the salaries of green collar workers have increased by five per cent since 2009 - far more than other jobs in the UK.
