A teenager from Grimsby who was so determined to forge a career in plumbing and heating engineering has managed to secure himself an apprenticeship after simply making sure he was right under his desired employers’ noses.

William Bradley appealed to the professionals who were visiting PTS Plumbing Trade Supplies by standing outside the shop wearing a sandwich board stating what he wanted and what he could offer them.

The determination of the 16-year-old soon saw him offered a few weeks of work experience with local company, Thorpe Plumbing, Heating and Gas Services, and on the back of that, he has now been offered a full-time apprenticeship with the firm.

“When I was standing outside wearing the sign I did feel a bit silly but it was one of the best things I have done,” he told the Grimsby Telegraph. “It only took about two hours for people to start approaching me asking what I was doing… I couldn’t be happier, especially after sending out loads of CVs and not getting a response.

Thorpe’s owner, Denis Thorpe, said that it was clear from William’s actions that he was a keen and resourceful person.

“When I saw William outside PTS I thought he was showing some great initiative to parade himself outside in the cold with the placard over his shoulders,” he said. “I had thought about employing an apprentice to expand the business and I think William deserves to be given a chance and if his training works out he can only be an asset in the future.”
