A new initiative to provide unemployed people with training such as tiling courses will help attendees in the long term, according to one of the experts behind the scheme.

Martin Clifford, client liaison manager at Kier Building Maintenance London, told Ealing Today that he has been thrilled by the results of the eight-week programme of DIY classes being carried out in Hanwell.

Tiling courses such as the ones being provided by the construction firm are "vital", according to Mr Clifford, with the project also covering plumbing, electrical, carpentry and decorating skills.

In his opinion, it could provide individuals with expertise for life.

He said: "Our group of participants is full of a diverse mix of nationalities, sexes and residents of differing ethic backgrounds who are all taking a real interest."

This month, an amateur DIY enthusiast suffered serious burns after carrying out tiling work in his kitchen. It is thought that fumes from the sealant Michael Holding was using ignited to cause the explosion.
