A woman in Runcorn, Cheshire was prosecuted by Halton Borough Council Trading Standards. The 33-year old woman plead guilty to two offences of making false claims when she appeared at Chester Crown Court. Her first offence was advertising her services on Yelp.com that she posted back in 2014. She was also using the Gas Safe Register's logo on all of her invoices to customers.

The woman in question was not only not 'Gas Safe Registered' but she also had no qualifications in Gas whatsoever. She was only ever caught for this offence when police pulled her over in 2017 when she was caught driving without a license. Found in the vehicle she was driving were documents with the Gas Safe Register's logo on and messages about gas work she had done were subsequently found on her mobile phone. They simply ran here false ID number through the Gas Safe Register website and it came to light that she was falsely claiming to be registered...She was recently charged and was fined £250 per offence and ordered to pay £1,000 towards the costs of the prosecution.

Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey.

According to Gas Safe Register, around 1.1 million gas jobs are carried out each year by illegal fitters who aren't properly qualified. The Gas Safe Register carries out their own investigations but it is impossible for them to check every installation, but eventually, you will be caught, there is no reason for not becoming registered it is only detrimental to yourself.

The importance of being Gas Safe Registered:

It is very important that if you are carrying out Gas work that you have the correct qualifications firstly and secondly that you have completed the competency test that is permitted when becoming 'Gas Safe Registered'. The cost of applying for the register is only £362 and can save you a lot of trouble down the road. This is a small fee considering the consequences of not complying with the correct legislation. This is for the health & safety of not the people that you are working for, their homes but for the safety of yourself.
