Here you can see one of our students getting a hands-on look at the process of Inspection and Testing.

What is Inspection and Testing?

So, firstly what is Inspection and Testing? Well, put simply Inspection and Testing defines the way that electricians ensure that a circuit, installation and so on is working as it should be and that it is safe to be used. There are set procedures that should be followed, using test equipment to identify whether or not installations are functioning as expected and as it should be in accordance with the latest edition of the IET wiring regulations.

What courses do we offer?

Firstly, we run a 5-day Level 2 Inspection & Testing course also known as 2392 - This course is meant for less experienced electricians or electricians in training looking to understand this topic. This Level 2 qualification will not only help you to obtain a good understanding of testing procedures but will also, if successful, will result in a City & Guilds certificate as evidence that you can competently inspect installations and test for faults.

The Level 2 Inspection & Testing course will cover a range of theory and practical aspects such as; electrical hazards & safety, how to isolate and installation, how to effectively use testing equipment, the correct sequence of tests, SELV or Separated or safety extra-low voltage and much more. The course will be completed by taking on an online assessment taken in our exam room to assess your theory knowledge and a practical assessment to ensure that you can now successfully Inspect and Test an electrical installation.

Students will gain experience on how Inspection and Testing should be carried out, first hand.

The Level 2 Inspection & Testing course is also a stepping stone onto the more advanced Level 3 Inspection and Testing course that we offer, also known as  2391-52. This is seen as a more advanced qualification to achieve by electricians in the industry, therefore it is essential that you have a solid understanding of electrics as a whole before taking on this qualification. This course will look much deeper in the topic, this option is completely theory-based and will be completed by way of an online multiple-choice examination, comprising of 60 questions - the examination has a maximum duration of 120 minutes. This is an open book exam and permitted materials are:

  • BS 7671
  • IET On-site Guide
  • IET Guidance Note 3

Candidates will also have to undertake a written assignment (80 minutes) comprising of 4 short-answer questions, again this is an open book assignment and permitted materials are:

  • BS 7671
  • IET On-site Guide
  • IET Guidance Note 3

In addition, candidates will; also need to successfully complete a 2.5-hour practical assignment; comprising of a full Initial verification and a Periodic inspection (combined within the same assessment) of a three-phase electrical installation, including completion of all appropriate documentation
