At Able Skills we are against illegal gas work. We have been teaching Gas training courses for 20-years and inform our students about the dangers that can happen within the trade. The purpose of the Gas Safe Register is to protect the public from unsafe gas work. It does this in two main ways, keeping a list of those legally qualified to carry out work and conducting public awareness campaigns to raise awareness of gas safety issues.

The problem is that there are always people looking to cut corners. Carrying out gas work without being registered will only end badly. A fairly recent example happened in Glasgow where a contractor has been fined £150,000 after one employee was fatally injured and another was seriously injured in a gas explosion...

Gas training courses

This incident should never have happened and wouldn't have happened if the people carrying out there work were qualified and registered with Gas Safe. The problem was that they had not ensured that the gas pipe in the boiler room had been isolated and purged prior to removal. The consequences of using a power tool on live or unpurged pipework are not ideal. Tragically, one man has lost his life as a result of this incident.

The Gas Safe Register do their part in trying to ensure the industry is safe for both the Gas Engineers themselves and the public. They do this through having a national investigations team tracking down illegal gas workers, regular inspections of Gas Safe registered engineers, educating consumers and raising awareness of gas safety and investigating reports of unsafe gas work!
